Situation

  • Tom has lived with John, Fred and William for 10 years
  • Each person has two-six hours of alone time/day
  • Home has live-in staff and single staff during evening and morning hours
  • Tom developed some mobility issues, fell and broke leg during the night – live-in staff found him in the morning
  • To assure Tom is safe, a traditional plan would be to move him or add awake night staff:
  • No one believes it is in Tom’s best interests to move him
  • He would move to a site with more restrictive staffing at a substantially higher cost
  • While even an awake staff wouldn’t have prevented the fall, they would have found and helped him sooner – too big a risk to repeat

  • Tom and his family want him to stay in the home, but all need to assure his safety

  • Adding staff is costly:

    • Overnight staff = seven hours/night x $10.50 x 365 nights = $26,827.50 plus T&B at 25% = $33,534.37/year
    • More staff adds restrictiveness for others and Tom.
  • Keep Tom in current setting

  • Minimize the restrictiveness and intrusiveness for Tom and housemates

  • Minimize cost increase while keeping Tom safe

The Plan for Tom’s Increasing Needs

Keep staff at current level. Add Sengistix technology to assure:

  • If Tom is out of bed at night for more than 15 minutes 11 pm – 5:30 am,
    • An alert call to live-in – “Tom is out of bed”
    • Sengistix system logs the call and how long it takes live-in to respond
    • If live-in doesn’t respond after two calls, calls escalate – ultimately to Sengistix, assuring there is a response
    • No one else effected by technology

Cost is minimal:

  • Used double bed sensors, motion detector in bedroom and contact sensor on door
    • Equipment (including install) = $1,150
    • Monthly SENS for one person = $169.96 x 12 = $2,039.40
